What are the different versions of auto headlamp assemblies for the USA, Middle East, and European markets?

1. Approval marking

USA version normally uses DOT/SAE marking.
European version normally uses E-mark/ECE marking.
Middle East version may require GCC/GSO compliance, and the exact acceptable marking depends on the destination country and importer.

2. Beam pattern

This is one of the most important differences. A headlamp for left-hand-drive vehicles and a headlamp for right-hand-drive vehicles may look similar outside, but the low-beam cutoff direction can be different. Using the wrong beam version may cause glare to oncoming traffic or poor road illumination.

For example:

  • LHD/right-side traffic: USA, most of Europe, most Middle East countries.
  • RHD/left-side traffic: UK, Ireland, Japan, Australia, some Asian markets.

So when ordering, do not only say "LH/RH headlamp." You should also confirm LHD beam or RHD beam.

3. Side marker and reflector design

USA-market headlamps often have amber side marker/side reflector functions integrated into the lamp. European and Middle East versions may not have the same amber side marker design, even if the outer shape looks almost identical.

4. DRL, LED, halogen, and projector differences

The same vehicle model may have several headlamp versions:

  • Halogen reflector type
  • Halogen projector type
  • LED type
  • LED with DRL
  • LED with AFS / adaptive function
  • Manual leveling version
  • Electric leveling version

The shell shape may be similar, but the internal wiring, connector, ECU, and mounting details can be different.

5. Headlamp leveling and washer system

European/ECE vehicles may have stricter requirements for headlamp leveling and installation. UNECE Regulation No. 48 covers installation rules for lighting devices, while UNECE Regulation No. 149 covers road illumination devices such as headlamps.

6. Middle East climate version

Middle East-market lamps often emphasize:

  • Better UV resistance
  • High-temperature resistance
  • Anti-yellowing lens coating
  • Better sealing against sand and dust
  • Stronger durability for long sunlight exposure

 

How does my factory pack auto headlamp assemblies?

Wrap the complete headlamp with:

The lens side and mounting-tab areas should have extra protection.
